The TAI-ZEN system was created in 1960 by Chief Grandmaster Howard Tague to overcome the shortcomings of traditional martial arts and directly answer the challenges of violence in today's society. The title, translated from the Japanese means: Tai-Zen (Body-Mind), Jiu-Jitsu (general art), Karate (empty hand). So Jiu-Jitsu Karate is the general art of empty hands.
While most systems practice aggression, Master Tague created a defensive art that is mechanically superior to aggression. Students are taught how to handle themselves not only in life-threatening situations but in confrontations of a less violent nature that are more common in day to day living.
The course of study, from beginner to advanced includes Form, Principle, Speed and Timing, Self Control, Muscular Obedience, Internal and External Powers of Ki, and Infighting and Battle Theory.
Be aware that no studying practitioner starts out capable of the above mentioned techniques, but rather acquires them during his studies and his practices by using his open-mindedness and determination. No practitioner should condemn himself for techniques that do not feel proficient, but be assured that we all crawled before we could walk, and walked before we could run, and so goes wisdom. In other words, the finest learning tools are patience, open-mindedness, concentration, and of course, determination.
--Chief Grandmaster Tague
Since different groups face different types of confrontations, we have separate classes for adults, teens, and children. The most common types of situations likely to be encountered by each group are covered with the emphasis on the most effective techniques for each.
In addition to attaining proficiency in the mechanical and psychological aspects of battle, the TAI-ZEN technician enjoys the confidence, physical enhancement, and feeling of well-being that accompanies his/her training.
Our students maintain a low key approach to learning. They enjoy the freedom to practice in a cooperative environment, without the burden of having to compete with other students. Thus, a TAI-ZEN dojo (school) offers its students a friendly, stimulating environment where learning can take place, and mistakes worked on rather than mocked.
